4 Ways to Prevent Hair Loss Today

On Wednesday, we gave some straight talk about Hair Loss.

If you missed that post, you should read it now. Today is all about Tips for preventing Hair Loss. Some of these tips were adapted from healthinfotimes.com.

Number One: Stay as stress free as possible. Life holds many stresses, but we need to learn how to cope with the stress instead of keeping it all locked up. Catch and Release that stress! If you don’t, stress will imbed itself in your body, and that can create more problems than just hair loss.

Two: Eat well! Treat your body right with more than plenty veggies, fruits, proteins, meats, and fish. Replace junk food with clean eats and your body and mind will thank you. You’ll turn yourself into a ball of energy, fueled and ready to take on each and every day.

Three: Massage Your Scalp. Take 10 minutes every night to calm yourself and massage your scalp with your fingertips. Be sure to massage every inch of your scalp. This will increase blood flow to your scalp and hair follicles will love you for it!

Four: Be Gentle! Always use a wide tooth comb when de-tangling your hair after you get out of the shower. Normally, you rake through your wet hair after tousling roughly with a towel. Stop this. Gently towel blot the ends of your hair. Although it is best to wait to comb through your hair when it’s dry, we all know that most of us comb our hair before it’s dry. If you must, wait until your hair is mostly dry, then start from the ends to the scalp using your wide tooth comb. You can even use a gentle de-tangling conditioner/treatment.

Straight Talk on Hair Loss

Hair loss can be devastating.

You might discover it in your brush, comb, on the shoulder of your clothes, or on your bathroom sink, but when you discover that you are losing hair, you feel immediately insecure.

I once experienced this feeling of insecurity. I remember, I was sitting in the styling chair, and my stylist was going through my hair, like she does at every appointment. She reviews the healthiness of my scalp and hair. This day, as she was going through her normal routine, she noticed a small patch of hair missing from the right side of my scalp, above my right ear, and near the nape of my neck. I quickly grabbed the hand mirror as she showed me the spots on my scalp. Immediately, I felt a sense of insecurity and sadness. At 20 years old, I knew I shouldn’t be losing my hair. The back story before this event is that I just had my appendix removed and had been heavy on morphine for pain while in the hospital. I remember that my scalp was always itchy after getting out of the hospital. I thought for sure that that was the reason for my patchy hair loss.

My stylist at Indulge Salon assured me that my hair would grow back and everything would be okay. I bought a three step treatment system by Nioxin. I used it religiously for three months, and eventually my hair started growing back and itching less.

The key to knowing how to treat thinning hair or hair loss is knowing what the cause may be. There are so many reasons that could be the cause of hair loss. Here are a few:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Immune system complications
  • Surgery
  • Side effect from medications
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Alopecia Areata
  • Androgenic Areata
  • Nutritional deficiency
  • Side effect from stress
  • Thyroid Disorder

Be sure that your stylist is checking your hair and scalp when you are at your regularly scheduled appointments. Since you should be visiting your stylist about every 4-5 weeks, your stylist will be able to inform you if there is a problem or potential concern. Should there be a concern that your stylist doesn’t believe will be solved at the salon, you should consult a dermatologist.

Make Life Easier–Freeze It

At Indulge Salon, we believe in making life easier, not just in beauty and fashion, but in our every day lives. Home, work, play.

While browsing my favorite new app, Pinterest, I found a dandy little post that is completely about making  home life easier–especially in the cooking and meal prep department!

Weekly meals can be such a daunting task, especially when unprepared. I always like to go grocery shopping on the weekend, that way, I can shop for everything that I’ll need during the week to make dinners. This is called: Prepping the Prep.

First, you’ll want to make a list of all the ingredients that you’ll need for all of your menu items. This blog is great because it has similar ingredients for all of the meals you’ll be preparing. Similar but different at the same time. You’ll also want to put on your list a box of ziplock freezer bags if you don’t already have them.

Second, you’ll get all of your items.

Third, get your chopping block and cutting boards out! This will probably take you the longest unless you have little helpers assisting you. You’ll want to cut everything up and divvy up the ingredients between the different bags you have set up for the week. Don’t lose your mind, label the bags with a permanent marker.

Side note***To make your life even easier–label one side with the name of the meal, and on the other side, write the ingredients. This way, you can reuse the ziplock bags. Easy and Green!

After you finish putting all of the ingredients in each of the bags, zip to seal, and place in the freezer.

Wasn’t that simple? All you have to do is take a bag out the morning of, place in the crock pot, and let it cook itself. By the time you get home, your dinner is ready. This allows you more time to decompress from the day, spend time with your kids, feed the pets, or just watch your favorite dvr’d program.

Planning the Prep is always going to help you life your life full throttle throughout the year. With more time on your hands, you can focus on things more important than meal planning, like beauty and fashion, duh!

Have a happy planning week!

Spray on Tan in York PA

Why is it that a tan can boost our self confidence?

We are in the day and age where our skin idols are Snookie and the cast of the Jersey Shore. Don’t get me wrong, this season’s Jersey Shore cast is in shape now more than ever before, and JWow has a body that could compete with any Victoria Secret model. Okay…off topic, I know, but come on…it’s true. A tan, whether it be a Driveway Diva Tan, or the delicate mist from an aerosol bottle, is a true self-confidence booster. Here’s what I don’t get-How do we go from high society and royalty staying indoors to avoid the sun and look as pale as possible to the more tan the better?

I have tried several self-tanners. The most recent self tanner is the Banana Boat “Summer Color” self-tanning mist. It has a light citrus scent, and seems to apply evenly while standing like a naked star. The hardest part about a misting self-tanner is applying evenly on your mid to upper back. I mean, it’s quite difficult to wrap your arm and aim the nozzle at the same time. Best bet is to have a girlfriend help you out.

After I’ve applied one coat, I start noticing and feeling instantly confidence about my body and my overall appearance. Hey, for $6.97, I’ll take confidence in a mist! Toward the back end of the week, and several self-tanning applications, I really start to feel good about myself. It’s an excellent way to start any day, especially a Manic Monday.

Here’s to Spray on Confidence!

The Quest: Paleo Lifestyle

What is this Paleo, New Evolution Lifestyle everyone keeps talking about?

Recently, I was given “The New Evolution Diet” written by Arthur De Vany. I had put off reading it up until last week, and even still I only read the first chapter and put the book down. I didn’t put it down because it wasn’t an interesting read, but because I’ve read so many “diet” books that claim they are the way to go, and that every other fad diet out there isn’t good. About two days ago I started reading it again and as I’m making my way through the chapters, I’m realizing how much sense this book actually makes. It’s unbelievable how many foods we eat are the link to why we have diseases and illnesses. The New Evolution Diet explains how some foods are the main causes of diabetes, obesity, and inflammation in our bodies. The author explains how our cells function in our body, and how it processes our food. We live in a world of processed and enriched foods that, yes, taste amazing, but our inherently terrible for our figures and our health.

I am curious as to the difference it could make to not only my health…but my voluptuous figure. The idea is just not sinking in that I can eat any of the “allowed” foods that I want, and exercise less resulting in the body that I’ve always desired. How can this possibly happen?

Stay tuned for more info into my quest for answers on the Paleo lifestyle…

Full Throttle Life: Flat Stomach Plan of Attack

It’s summertime, and we know what you’re thinking…I’ve got to get in shape, I’ve got to get that flat stomach I’ve been attempting to pull off.

Here’s the trick: You must be strictly watching your consumption of food, be consistent with your workout schedule, and be willing to modify your routine.

First Thing’s First: I can’t stress enough how important it is to be strict about your diet. Make a plan of attack for each day (or the whole week!). Balance out your meals with plenty of protein, salads (minimal vinaigrette dressing), and vegetables. Remember that fruits have a lot of sugar in them so keep those to a minimum as well. Make sure you’re eating enough because you’ll need the energy for your tough workouts.

Secondly: Be completely consistent to your workout schedule. If you plan to go to gym in the morning before work go at the time you set your alarm for. If you plan to go at night after work, pack your gym bag with all the essentials the day before and put it in your car. If you are going to do “two-a-days” (working out twice a day), then stick to it. Whatever time or times of day you plan on working out, then really do it. Don’t let that voice in your head that wants you to fail talk you out of your routine. The hardest part is usually getting to the gym, but once you’re there, and you start workin’ it, that angel on your shoulder usually kicks in with encouragement. Sometimes, it helps to create a calendar and X-off the days that you go. It gives you a visual countdown to your goal date.

Last, but Not Least: Modify. Modify. Modify. Switch it up. Every two weeks you should be switching up your routine. If you’re always working with weight machines, do a class instead. You can also buy an exercise book with many different exercises in them. Work out an exercise routine and constantly review it to update the moves you are doing. Tweaking it just slightly will keep your muscles guessing. This is what keeps us (or gets us) in shape.

These three steps aren’t always easy, especially since we have so much temptation around us 24/7. Avoid it, and keep your goal at the front of your mind. Getting into shape isn’t just great for us to maintain our health, but it’s a step closer to living that Full Throttle life we all desire.

As always,

Live your life…Full Throttle!

Healthy Skin is IN

Summer is a great time to be outside enjoying the weather, great outdoors, beach, and sun. Although it brings great weather, it can be very harsh on our skin. Laying out at the beach the sting of sand blowing in the breeze, the hot sun on our skin can completely reverse the care we gave our skin throughout the Spring.  It’s so important to maintain lush, moisturized skin especially through the Summer in prep for Fall. Here’s what you can do to keep your skin healthy and maintained:
  1. Drink LOTS-O-WATER-At least 8- 8oz glasses of water or 4- 16 oz bottles of water. Water is extremely important, not just for our skin’s health, but our every day health. It helps release toxins in our body, which cleanses our bodies of impurities.
  2. Exfoliate-Be sure to use an Exfoliating Body Bar. Use in the shower, where it’s hot and steamy.
  3. Follow Up-Moisturize using your Indulge Body Butter Bar right after you get out of the shower. Only dab, dab, dab your skin-Don’t feel like you have to completely dry off. When your body is slightly moist is the best time to use the Indulge Body Butter Bar. Use it from head-to-toe, then buff. Gently use a washcloth to buff your skin. This will allow the amazing natural ingredients in the Indulge Body Butter Bar to properly penetrate the skin.
  4. Last, but not least-Make sure you use a SPF 15 or higher if you plan on being outside. Even if it’s overcast, the UVA and UVB rays can still burn you. It’s important to get into a routine for applying SPF to your skin before starting your day.

Should you follow the above mentioned, your skin will be properly cared for, moisturized, and supple. If you don’t have an Indulge Body Butter Bar, let me tell you, they are amazing! They start out at only $10 each for a block. They’re wonderful and come in several scents. Call either Indulge on S. George Street (717-846-4424) or on E. Market Street (717-718-4465) to arrange for a Body Butter Bar Consultation. We can even set aside some bars for you to pick up. Easy Peasy!

Have a Healthy Skin Day!

How to Lose Weight and Not Go Crazy

Why does it seem that whenever we begin a diet, we are fully intent on “finishing it,” but a week or so into the diet, results aren’t coming fast enough and we give up. The problem is that we are so used to getting instant results that we are disappointed when we don’t get what we want and get it right away. Here are a few tips on how to lose weight and not go crazy doing it:

1. Envision A Goal-Where you want to be is extremely important and knowing where you are going is the first step to any journey.

2. Pictures and Paper-Find any and all pictures of the body you are looking to have. Cut out motivating words and phrases. This is also known as a Vision Board. You’ll want to put all of your compiled pictures and words on this Vision Board. Put the board up anywhere in your house where you’ll see it every day. Constant reminders of what you want will only motivate you subconsciously to strive for your end goal.

3. Change it Up-If you have been working out at home, begin going to a gym, workout with a friend, walk/run outside, go on a hike. Do things differently. Weight loss is all dependent on you changing up your workout. Trick your muscles. Every two weeks you should be changing up your routine.

4. Challenge Yourself-If you aren’t profusely sweating during your workout, you need to put more into it. Ever hear the saying “What you put in is what you get out”? That is exactly how weight loss is, too. You’ll need to focus every minute of every workout session. Stay focused and you’ll see results. Don’t be afraid of a little soreness either. No pain, no gain.

5. Sleep-Make sure you’re getting at least 6-8 hours of meaningful sleep every night. Notice I said ‘meaningful’. You need to get in touch with your R.E.M. sleep and have at least 6-8 hours of restful uninterrupted sleep. The more you get, the more energy you will have.

6. Eat fresh-Fresh meat. Fresh veggies. Fresh fruit. All these wonderful sayings that actually are truthful-“You Are What You Eat”. Imagine that with everything you consume. You should be eating tons of green veggies, salads, proteins, and some fruits. Don’t forget that you need to always have a protein with your salads.  This means you should be having grilled chicken with salad, or some tasty salmon with green beans or peas. So Delicious!

Be prepared for each week, and make a calendar for a goal “date”. Don’t rush your lifestyle change. Embrace the changes you are making to your diet, your exercise schedule, your sleep habits. You’ll see the weight come off, but you have to stick to your goal and where you want to end up. Nothing good comes easy. So take your time and be happy with the progress you’ll be making. You’ll get to celebrate by buying smaller clothes!

You’re on your way to a skinnier Full Throttle Life!
