The Five-Second Rule Debunked

“Ooops!”

I say, as I pick up that bit of trail mix that just fell on the floor. All of my  life, I have always been told “ahh..that won’t hurtchya…use the five-second rule. You’ll be fine.” So, I pick it up with minimal hesitation and pop the suckers in my mouth. Turns out, your food, according to Jorge Parada, Medical Director of infection control at Loyola University Healthcare System, says that “more than 99 percent of the bacteria” attaches itself to your dropped morsel almost immediately. Forget those five precious seconds! Forego the possible germ intake, and reach into the bag for a fresh bite instead.

If you’re a risk taker, however, you’ll probably continue to use the “rule” at future incidents.

Green Machine Smoothie

Remember awhile back when we posted a recipe for an AMAZING smoothie? If not, you should read it now. It provided a simple way to start your day off right with an awesome recipe.

Today, we are hoping to help you start off your day with another fabulous recipe. This time, it’s power packed with all things green!

This recipe can be adapted in so many different ways! The key is: keep it green. Green vegetables and fruits contain many necessary nutrients that can be very beneficial in keeping your skin clear and vibrant, which is what this month is all about!

Here’s your basic recipe:

• 3 leaves of Kale (chopped up to 1 cup).
• 1 cup of seedless Grapes
• 1 cup of thickly sliced Cucumber
• 1 cup of chopped up Green Apple (hint: Remove the core and seeds)
• 1/2 cup of Water
• 1 cup of Yogurt (try Chobani)
• 1 Banana

So when I first learned that I was using Kale as my first ingredient, I thought…ew…that does not sound good at all. Here’s the kicker-the grapes, apple, and banana cover up any lingering kale taste or seaweed thought. It turns out absolutely delicious. If you try the Kale and just can’t get past the thought of it coming from the great blue ocean try the following:

• Spinach
• Arugula lettuce
• Pears
• Avocado
• Dandelion greens
• Broccoli
• Carrot greens
• Red lettuce
• Celery
• any others you can think of!

There are endless combinations you can make with smoothies. They are fantastic, and if you prepare the ingredients the night before or get up 5 minutes earlier in the morning you can have the freshest of fresh breakfasts easily prepared right in your own kitchen.

The easiest way to prepare your smoothie is to purchase an on-the-go blender with detachable bottle. I recently purchased a “Magic Bullet” knock-off from GNC for around $20, and it is, by far, one of the best purchases I have ever made. I highly recommend it. The attachments are so easy to clean and you aren’t wasting time with a huge blender, trying to clean around the blade by digging your hand deep  into the bottom of the blender. Make your life easy–pick up an easy on-the-go blender with detachable bottles.
